Rugosa roses are extremely hardy and most are exceptionally disease resistant with wonderful wrinkled, healthy foliage. All are derived from R. rugosa, a native of Japan and Siberia. Their fragrance has notes of spice. Their ability to repeat flower, make them ideal hedging plants. Often seen en masse in parks or by roadways. Some have attractive red hips, which adorn them from late Summer to Autumn. These are often used in cooking for making rose hip syrup, as well as dried for use in teas.
Most popular of the rugosa roses with a dazzling display of autumn foliage is Roseraie de l’Hay. Although Hansa, is almost identical, but has a more manageable upright habit. For huge blooms “Fru Dagmar Hastrup‘ is one to admire, it also has an RHS Award of Garden Merit. The Grootendorst Rugosas; F.J; Pink; Peach and White are colourful additions to a garden.
Pruning Prune to desired shape once established in February or March. For hedging, ensure the tallest stems are cut regularly to encourage a bushier habit.
