More about Damask Roses:
Rosa damescena cultivars or ‘Damask Roses’ have two distinct sections; the Summer Damasks and the Autumn Damasks – such as Ruby Rescht. The former flower once only and are large, thorny quite open growing shrubs with intensely fragrant pink to white flowers. The latter and their allies the Portland roses are shorter more compact shrubs with the ability to repeat flower in Autumn, their colour range also includes red varieties and they share the same deep perfume.
A sport of the Portland Damask, ‘Rose de Rescht’, Ruby Rescht was discovered by Trevor many years ago – one stem standing out amongst hundreds. The rose has a much more intense colouring than its parent, with showstopping flowers of vibrant magenta and purple – reminiscent of a mixed berry compote. Its fully double blooms, button eye, and gorgeously strong fragrance, make Ruby Rescht a compact repeat flowering variety that packs a punch in both colour and scent.
Pruning Guide: Prune summer flowering Damask varieties, once established, by a removal of one or two very old stems after flowering.
