A chance cross between Old Blush China and the Autumn Damask led to the first of the Bourbon Roses. This occurred in 1817 on the Ile de Bourbon an island in the Indian ocean. Later it was hybridised further with Gallica and Damask roses. Most varieties are blessed with a good fragrance, recurrent flowering and refined foliage.
Variegata di Bologna has very unusual fully double cupped blooms of crimson stripes on blush pink. It forms a large shrub, and has a wonderful fragrance. While it usually flowers in June and July, it can repeat flower occasionally.
Pruning Guide: Requires little pruning except for the removal of very old wood once established (after flowering) and perhaps the shortening of any growths by one third in February.
