We are a family-run enterprise of specialist rose growers based in Norfolk. Born and brought up in Surrey I came to Norwich in the late 1970s to study biology at the University of East Anglia. A holiday job with Peter Beales Roses eventually led to a full time position and a lifelong interest and appreciation for roses. Captured by their romantic names and intoxicating fragrance, the old roses have always been a special passion. In youthful exuberance with my wife Vanessa we began a rose nursery in 1984, planting our first crop of a few thousand rose stocks by hand.
The nursery grew alongside our family and was soon supplying many specialist garden centres and other nurseries across the UK and Europe. Of course a few technological advancements have helped, but essentially rose growing remains a highly skilled and very labour intensive process. With four children we thankfully always had plenty of helping hands (very good they were too) but sadly they all grew up and flew the nest. Our youngest, Henry, eventually came back to join us in 2014 after working in London. Having had a change of heart he took his RHS exams and gained valuable garden centre experience at Fulham Palace. His youth brings lots of new ideas, talents and enthusiasm.
